Learning Through Doing
Presenters:
Dr Andrew Spiers MBE, Ardingly Solar Car Project Manager & a Team of students from Ardingly & Ifield College
The story of two colleges (Ardingly & Ifield) coming together to design, build and race a state-of-the-art solar powered car across Australia (Darwin to Adelaide) in the 2019 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Out of 52 entrants only 31 finished this gruelling race. This school solar team with the help of many local firms and the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II outperformed some of the top universities including Cambridge and Stanford. The talk will discuss how these two schools brought industry right into the heart of the classroom educating students by building this solar car. Future plans will also be discussed including: a UK road journey from John O'Groats to Crawley to highlight the need for sustainable transport, the design and building of a new flat pack solar powered car for the developing world and the instigation of a new school course in sustainable engineering developed with the Institute of the Motoring Industry.
