The opening of a sales call often determines whether the buyer engages or switches off.
Many salespeople focus so heavily on what they want to say that they forget what the buyer needs to feel. A strong opening creates clarity, reduces pressure and gives the other person a reason to participate in the conversation.
Begin with clarity and purpose
Avoid vague openings such as, “I just wanted to have a quick chat.”
Instead, explain why the conversation is taking place and what you hope to understand:
“Thanks for your time today. I’d like to understand the challenges you’re facing, what you want to achieve and whether I may be able to help.”
This gives the conversation direction without making assumptions.
Show that you have prepared
A generic question such as, “Tell me about your business,” can make the buyer feel that no preparation has taken place.
Reference something relevant you have noticed about their organisation, market or current priorities, then use it to begin a meaningful conversation.
Preparation demonstrates interest. It also helps the buyer feel that the conversation is about them, rather than simply another sales opportunity.
Ask a question that creates value
One of the most effective opening questions is:
“What would make this conversation valuable for you today?”
This helps you understand the buyer’s priorities before moving into your own agenda. It also creates a more collaborative and emotionally intelligent conversation from the outset.
A professional services client I worked with had been struggling with sales calls that felt formal and uncomfortable. Prospects answered questions politely but rarely progressed.
We changed the first few minutes of each call. He introduced the purpose clearly, referred to something relevant he had researched and asked what would make the conversation useful.
The calls became more natural, prospects shared more openly and his follow-up conversion improved significantly.
The central message is simple:
You don’t win a sales call by talking first. You win it by creating the conditions for an honest conversation.
