If your best salesperson left tomorrow, how much of your sales success would leave with them?
That question tells you a great deal about the strength of your sales culture.
Many growing businesses rely heavily on one or two experienced people who know the customers, understand the market and instinctively know how to win business.
That can work for a while. The problem comes when too much knowledge, too many relationships and too much commercial success sit with individuals rather than within the business itself.
A stronger sales culture is built around a repeatable approach.
That means having clear expectations around how opportunities are identified, how needs are understood, how value is communicated and how customers are followed up.
It also means creating a culture where salespeople can be open about what is really happening in their pipeline.
I’ve worked with businesses where the forecast looked healthy on paper, but closer conversations revealed that several opportunities were far less advanced than everyone believed. Once the team felt able to talk honestly about those opportunities, the business could make much better decisions.
That is where Emotional Intelligence and integrity matter.
A strong sales culture isn’t about pushing people harder or measuring more activity. It is about creating consistent behaviours, better conversations and greater accountability.
Ask yourself:
Is our sales performance driven by our systems, or by a few key individuals?
If the answer is the latter, strengthening your sales culture could be one of the most important steps you take towards more sustainable growth.
I explore this in more detail in my blog, Sales Culture Transformation: Professionalising SMEs, including why a more structured, high-integrity sales culture can support scalability, stronger leadership and long-term business value.
