We’re joined by Andrew Spiers MBE, Ardingly Ifield Solar Car Project Manager and Dave Birkenhead, Science Teacher and Ifield Coordinator of Ardingly Ifield Solar who will be sharing the latest Ardingly Ifield Solar Car Project update.
Ardingly Ifield Solar an EarthShot Nominated Project is a joint collaboration between the pupils of Ifield Community College and Ardingly College, we will give a presentation on the 12 year history of the project covering our two trips from 2015 & 2019, in which we ventured to Australia to compete in the 3000km Bridgestone World Solar challenge. The team will introduce their new car, a ‘Solar Utility Vehicle’ with extendable wings which acts as a clean mobile generator. The car is due for completion at the end of June and has several unique developments, including the use of a cell clip method which has allowed the students to construct a 22kWh battery containing 2000 cells. The team is after input to take this concept car into production. The project has also through the generosity of GEW (EC) Ltd and the Rae family converted a double decker bus into a mobile laboratory and versatile teaching facility with 3D printer and design stations. The bus’s internals are powered by solar cells mounted on the roof, as one would expect from our super charged solar team. The bus is visiting local schools and events, subsequently inspiring the next generation. In addition, the team have developed an innovative online solar diploma which teaches the basics of the SUV’s technologies and teaches the basics of PCB design and the use of FEA. All these activities are designed to empower the next generation to make a positive difference to our world.
