50 challenges for 50th birthday

Nicky Clarke, from Littlehampton, has set herself 50 challenges for her 50th birthday to raise vital funds for Chestnut Tree House children's hospice.

Last spring, furloughed and struggling to think of ways to celebrate her 49th birthday in lockdown, Nicky asked friends and family to donate what they would have spent on her gift to Chestnut Tree House children's hospice in return for a homemade bake. Many lemon drizzle cakes later, and a newfound love for baking, Nicky raised an incredible £250 and was determined to raise more.

Fast-forward to Nicky's 50th Birthday in 2021, and she has set herself 50 challenges for her 50th birthday. Challenges vary from visiting every tube station in one day to running 50k, and Nicky has set herself one year to complete them all.

"I've come up with some of the challenges myself, but friends and family have set me challenges too," says Nicky. "My boss challenged me to give up wine for 50 days, and a family member has challenged me to dye my hair a funky colour!

"The challenges have made me try so many different things that I wouldn't usually do. For example, I took on a 120ft abseil challenge down Peacehaven's White Cliffs which I was so nervous about, but I loved it and want to do it all over again! I also have a 15,000ft skydive booked for August."

Speaking about why she chose to support Chestnut Tree House,Nicky said: "Chestnut Tree House makes such a big difference to local families, and it's been a really difficult year for charities and fundraising. I'd encourage anyone to fundraise and try something new, it doesn't matter how big or small your fundraising is, every penny helps. You can even give your time and volunteer. There's a way to get involved for everyone!"

Nicky has already smashed her original fundraising target of £1,500. To sponsor Nicky, please visit: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/nicola-clark57
