Flexibility Matters - Women Who Dare to be Different Change our World!

International Women's Day on the 8th March is a timely reminder that by daring to be different, women throughout history have changed our world.

Self-taught scientist Mary Anning, who discovered one of the first dinosaur fossils and Marie Curie, whose scientific discoveries launched effective cures for cancer, are just two of a long list. And let's not forget Ada Lovelace, an icon of feminist technical achievement who is considered by many to be the first computer programmer. An industry that has since transformed businesses and our lives.

More recently, lawyer and First Lady, Michelle Obama inspirationally teaches us that anything is possible, journalist Stacey Dooley fearlessly highlights female social issues in developing countries and Greta Thunberg continues to lead the largest climate strike in history, at only 17 years old.

When we think about some of these trail blazing women, it's a stark realisation that their achievements have been in areas of the working world that seem to still be dominated by men. This year's International Women's Day focuses on the theme 'an equal word in an enabled world' #EachforEqual and marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Gender parity across a more diverse range of industries became a focus for the government in 2018 as the gender pay submission laws were designed to close the gender pay gap, but there's still a way to go.

At Flexibility Matters, one way that we think enables businesses to achieve good gender parity is by embracing flexible working, which statistics still show is predominantly more requested by women.

A recent survey of our database revealed that 62% are currently working flexibly and of those who are not, 89% want to be. Plus, they reported the main benefit for both themselves and their employers is increased productivity due to working the hours when they are most efficient.

Flexibility matching all types of businesses with specialist individuals, male or female, seeking flexible roles, we recognise the value of work/life balance and the business benefits of a fully flexible workforce.
