A note from our co founder Fler

How is it March already?! With Wolo turning 4 next week, we wanted to take this opportunity, in the first newsletter of the year, to thank you all for your ongoing support.

The Wolo 100 Club has grown, and we now have a variety of businesses generously donating £100 a month to help pay for the work we do. We are busier than ever at the moment and over the past 4 years, we've made incredible strides. What began as an idea following our personal cancer diagnosis, has now blossomed into a charity, serving the entire Sussex region, providing support to over 145 families and almost 300 children, all on their cancer journeys.

We wanted to share with you some of the things we have been up to over the last year…

·    We have distributed £13,600 of supermarket vouchers to 136 families during the cost-of-living crisis - families are reporting the financial impact of cancer means they are struggling to buy food, pay for utilities and just get by.

·    We’ve created a bespoke Wellness Course enabling participants to learn the tools to be able to deal with the stress and trauma brought on by their cancer diagnosis/family’s journey. Twenty families have benefitted from this to date, with the real impact being immeasurable - participants have reported it as ‘life-changing’.

·    We have strengthened our relationships with other local charities, businesses and service providers; welcomed new Trustees and Ambassadors, and developed new partnerships with a Soul midwife and Menopause GP - all with one goal in mind - our mission - to help improve the quality of life of families in Sussex affected by cancer.

·    We have continued with our weekly running/walking/yoga/gym groups, giving families the chance to gain all the physical benefits of exercise as well as make new friends. We’ve been go-karting, ice skating, to ninja arena, tried barn dancing at WoloFest, and so many of the families we are supporting have grown their support networks as a result of the events you have helped to fund. Thank you.

·    Marcos has qualified as a Wim Hof instructor and has built a retreat in his garden with cold bath, sauna, changing rooms, fire pit and huge bell tent for breathwork and relaxation. Check out his Warriors Breath Retreat. Wolo families can benefit twice a month from this experience, helping to introduce them to new ways to nurture themselves.

·    It’s not just family events or self-care we have helped with, we’re also there for families in practical ways. We’ve purchased mattresses, ovens, dishwashers, medical aids, sofas, MOT’s and helped to build a shed, fix doors, floors and other things that need doing when everything else feels too much. Nothing is too much trouble. Thank you for helping us to be there when families need us the most.

·    We’re award-winning! Wolo won the community business of the year at the Sussex Chamber of Business Awards. Wow. What an honour! The Wolo community has grown exponentially and regular family events, wellness activities and bespoke support packages ensure families feel supported on every level.

·    We now have our very own Wolo Wagon! Thanks to the Rampion Community Fund, and Ocean Dadventure; we’re doing our bit for the environment and have an all-electric van to whizz around in! If you see us out and about, give us a wave!

·    We have been busy planning our biggest fundraising event of the year; WoloBall - Festive Fiesta on Friday 13th December at Buxted Park Hotel in Uckfield. Read on to find out more…..

Sadly, the last year has also meant saying goodbye to some incredible people who will be forever in our hearts. We continue to support their families; grief comes in waves, and we’re here to hold their hands for as long as they need us.

If you’d like to volunteer, join the Wolo 100 Club or help raise some funds for us, please get in touch. If you know someone living in Sussex affected by cancer who has a child under 16, please encourage them to reach out to us for support.

Life is precious, let’s make the most of it!
