Wiston Estate has been farmed by the Goring family since 1743. When current owner Harry Goring married South African Pip in the 1970s she came to the South Downs and had a dream to plant a vineyard. 30 years later Pip's dream became a reality with the planting of vines - and the wine they produced quickly became recognised as some of the best ever made in England. The wines were the catalyst to the estate opening itself up - driving an interest from the community in the land and how it produced grapes for wine. Chalk Restaurant was the next step in the dream - to have a place to welcome guests, serve the wines and showcase some of the other wonderful produce we are lucky to have access to in this part of England. Chalk opened its doors in 2021 and since has won a huge amount of praise and recognition for the beautifully presented and delicious dishes the team serve up.
Now 6000 acres, much of which is farmed in a regenerative way, the estate is a beautiful area of the South Downs. There is a strong desire to protect the landscape, its heritage and the flora and fauna which live here. The extremely rare habitat of chalk grassland can be found on the estate, and we have an estate ecologist who helps monitor and protect these natural habitats.
Today we are keen to welcome people to Wiston - whether to discover the wines, the food, or the landscape and farming. We have event spaces available to hire, and opportunities for corporate entertainment, and gifting with our wines.
