Building on a research partnership with Restaurants Brighton, the University of Brighton is sponsoring the Sustainability Champions category in the BRAVO Awards.
The University of Brighton is strengthening its commitment to local sustainability by sponsoring the Sustainability Champions category in this year’s BRAVO Awards – Brighton’s largest and most recognised celebration of food and drink.
Now in their tenth year, the BRAVOs attract more than 70,000 public votes and spotlight hundreds of much‑loved independent venues across Brighton & Hove and Sussex. By supporting the awards, the University is helping to highlight the hospitality businesses that are making the region cleaner, greener and more resilient. Public voting runs from 10 February to 10 March 2026.
To be shortlisted, venues have completed the pioneering Sustainability Toolkit, developed by University of Brighton researchers in partnership with Restaurants Brighton. The free toolkit helps hospitality businesses measure, understand and improve their environmental and social impact. It enables organisations to assess areas such as:
- energy and water use
- food waste
- sustainable sourcing
- staff wellbeing
- community engagement.
The toolkit also shares practical advice and local case studies, showing how sustainable choices can help cut costs, retain staff and transform business performance.
Dr Adam Jones led the University of Brighton team of researchers. Principal Lecturer in the School of Business and Law and Director of the university’s Help to Grow business leadership programme, he said:
“Sponsoring the Sustainability Champions Award is the perfect fit for us. Sustainability is one of the University of Brighton’s core values, alongside equity, courage, creativity and partnership. Our commitment to sustainability underpins how we teach, research and work with our communities. From tackling global challenges to delivering practical local impact, we seek to expand inspiring sustainable practice and salute the local hospitality providers who are leading the way.”
With around 20,000 students and staff studying and working across the city, the university community is deeply embedded in local life and plays its part; students and colleagues are enthusiastic diners, passionate citizens and active changemakers who care about where their food comes from and how businesses operate. Through the awards, people can share their favourite neighbourhood spots, discover new favourites and recognise the dedication behind running a sustainable, independent business.
This partnership reflects the university’s role as a key partner in sustainability and innovation within Brighton and across our region. By connecting academic expertise with local businesses, the university is helping organisations to take meaningful steps on their sustainability journey and supporting the city’s wider net zero ambitions.
