Why Post-Demo Silence Usually Starts During the Demo

Most salespeople try to solve prospect ghosting after the demo has finished. By then, the real opportunity may already have been missed.

When a prospect stops responding, it’s tempting to blame price, timing or changing priorities. Sometimes those are the reasons. However, silence can also indicate that a concern wasn’t discussed, the value wasn’t clear or the next step was never properly agreed.

The prospect may not have lost interest after the demo. They may have become uncertain during it.

The Demo Isn’t Only a Presentation

Imagine a prospect becoming noticeably quieter when implementation is discussed. The salesperson assumes everything is clear and continues through the remaining slides.

Afterwards, emails go unanswered and calls aren’t returned.

The solution may have been suitable, but the prospect left the conversation worried about the workload involved. Because that concern wasn’t explored while both parties were talking, it became a reason to delay.

This is where Emotional Intelligence becomes commercially valuable. It helps salespeople notice changes in a conversation, remain curious and ask thoughtful questions rather than making assumptions.

Three Ways to Prevent Post-Demo Ghosting

Make honesty feel safe

Give prospects permission to say that the solution isn’t right for them. You might say:

“If you decide this isn’t the right fit, please tell me. I’d rather we’re honest with each other than spend time pursuing something that isn’t suitable.”

This reduces pressure and makes genuine concerns easier to discuss.

Agree one specific next step

Avoid finishing with a vague promise to send information and speak again soon. Agree what will happen, why it matters and when it will take place.

A ten-minute conversation with the prospect and their technical lead next Tuesday is a genuine next step. Sending a proposal and hoping for a response isn’t.

Explore hesitation while you’re together

If someone becomes quieter or appears uncertain, acknowledge it without making a judgement:

“I noticed you became quieter when we discussed implementation. What concerns, if any, do you have about what would be involved?”

Silence doesn’t always indicate an objection, but it deserves curiosity.

Better Conversations Create Better Follow-Up

The most effective way to reduce ghosting isn’t to become more persistent afterwards. It’s to create greater honesty, clarity and commitment before the conversation ends.

Before concluding your next sales demo, ask yourself:

Has the prospect felt able to be honest?

Have we explored their concerns?

Have we agreed a clear and meaningful next step?

Better follow-up begins with a better sales conversation.
