How AI is reshaping your protection needs

Artificial intelligence is no longer a speculative technology; it has matured into a transformative force reshaping the architecture of global commerce. AI is now dismantling traditional operating models across every major sector re-engineering how value is created, delivered, and sustained.

Within the Pure protection market (life insurance, critical illness, and income protection) Artificial intelligence is transforming the industry by addressing structural challenges like low engagement and lengthy underwriting cycles. According to a recent review by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority), AI could address protection gaps where only 30% of adults hold protection policies. Artificial intelligence (AI) could help tackle the protection gap, but the technology may also lead to more hyper-personalisation, making the market more opaque.

What does this mean for you

For consumers, the integration of AI into pure protection (life, critical illness, and income protection) creates cheaper, faster, and more tailored cover along with new consumer protection risks and potential pricing disadvantages.

Traditional medical underwriting often takes days or weeks to complete. Instead, AI models can analyze medical records, disclosures and lifestyle data in seconds, reducing decision times for standard risks from weeks to minutes.

Automating the administration process will also reduce overhead costs. These operational savings allow insurance providers to offer lower premiums for standard non-complex life, critical illness, and income protection policies.

For claims, an automated document verification allows insurers to validate straightforward claims rapidly, getting funds to families in hours or days when they need it most.

The drawbacks of using AI for complex cases

There are of course drawbacks to relying on unemotional algorithms to assess sensitive claims. AI will look to identify patterns across thousands of data points when evaluating a health risk. So if a consumer is declined life cover, the premiums are higher, or their income protection claim is rejected, the insurer’s human staff may not be able to explain the algorithm’s reasoning. This leaves consumers without clear feedback, making it difficult to challenge mistakes or appeal unfair declines.

Consumers with low digital literacy, non-standard medical conditions, or temporary vulnerabilities (e.g., sudden bereavement or mental health crises) could be improperly categorised by automated systems. An AI chatbot might struggle with complex medical histories, pushing vulnerable applicants away, issue inaccurate cover or even a decline.

AI-driven policies will increasingly rely on receipt of continuous data through wearable fitness devices, digital health apps, and prescription histories to reward healthy behaviour. But this would see a shift towards a more invasive data collection ecosystem. Consumers could face privacy risks, exposure to data breaches or the threat that their cover could be (dynamically) adjusted if they stop sharing personal data.

What should you do now

If you are young, healthy, and looking for standard, straightforward life cover, an automated AI portal should be able to offer you quick quotes and low rates. While AI speeds up routine administration, you should check that your insurance provider has dedicated human case handlers for complex claims (e.g., critical illness diagnosis or bereavement payouts).

If, however, you have pre-existing conditions, a hazardous occupation, or a complex medical history, it is better not to rely solely on automation where the decision could either be an inaccurate decline or a significant hike in premiums. Instead, it’s important to engage with your broker who can negotiate directly with specialist underwriters.
