This winter, we are having to make some difficult decisions. Hospices nationwide are facing a funding crisis, and we are not immune. Government funding for our vital care hasn’t kept pace with rising costs and growing demand for our services is adding to the challenge – especially as another winter approaches. There are more families we want to support, but instead we’re having to make tough decisions about which services we can provide in the future.
We’re reaching out now because we want to continue being there for children and adults across Sussex and South East Hampshire - helping families make precious memories and supporting them through the hardest moments of their lives. The alternative is a future none of us want to imagine: one without local hospice care.
The numbers don’t add up
Hospices like ours have provided essential palliative and end-of-life care for decades, supporting children, young people and adults in their own homes, their communities and in our hospices. We’ve kept people out of A&E and made it possible for them to die in peace in the place they have chosen, surrounded by their loved ones.
But the numbers don’t add up. Every year, it costs the Southern Hospice Group over £34 million to provide our services. This figure has gone up and up as bills have risen. Government funding only covers around 20% of the running costs of our care services. We’re calling for this to change and are doing everything we can to make sure our hospices are here in years to come – but we can’t keep on running at a loss.
Will you support us this winter so we can be here for the future?
That’s why we’ve launched our Winter Appeal, aiming to raise £200,000 to protect hospice care at:
- Chestnut Tree House (children’s hospice for Sussex and South East Hampshire)
- Martlets (adult hospice for Brighton & Hove)
- St Barnabas House (adult hospice for Worthing and surrounding areas)
We’re asking local businesses to match fund public donations, doubling the impact and helping us reach our goal- we’d love for you to be part of this campaign.
