Last year, 140 incredible volunteers helped more than 650 walkers raise an astonishing £165,000 for the hospice. Now it’s looking for enthusiastic members of the community to do it again.
With four distances to choose from – 2, 7, 13, or 17 miles – the Midnight Walk is an unforgettable sponsored walk for the whole community, which promises an energetic night of celebration, reflection and remembrance.
The Pease Pottage-based charity, which provides vital end of life care and support to around 2,000 people across East Surrey and West Sussex each year, can only run its much-loved and biggest fundraiser thanks to incredible volunteers giving up their time to help throughout the night.
The main volunteer role is a route guide, who – in pairs – direct walkers along the route, keeping them safe and encouraging them in their challenge.
This year, Ian and Mandy Agnew will be volunteering as route guides for the second time. But what is it about the Midnight Walk that keeps them coming back? Ian shares: “It was reactions from the wider community and those involved in the Midnight Walk that makes being involved in this event very worthwhile, rewarding and enjoyable – so repeat volunteering this year is a natural option.”
Last year, Mandy and Ian were stationed at a mini roundabout in Horsham to point walkers in the right direction. Looking back on the night, Ian recalls “The enthusiasm and good humour of everyone taking part – be they serious walkers or the party goers in fancy dress – was infectious, making our time on duty so very pleasurable. We also had visits from two local residents with offers of tea and coffee!”
He also adds, “These encounters, and people showing an interest in learning about the reasons for the Midnight Walk and the work of St Catherine’s in general contributed to the fun of the evening for us.”
There’s also volunteering opportunities available at the event’s refreshments stops where you will help keep walkers fuelled, hydrated and energised so they can complete their challenge.
St Catherine’s is looking for people to help between 2pm and 6am with an average volunteering shift of about five hours. However, any amount of time is appreciated and will be a significant help.
