Carnegie Group wins Small Business of the Year at the Prestigious Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards 2025

Carnegie Group won the milestone Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards Small Business of the Year award in a category that was highly competitive. In the UK at the end of 2024 small business with 10-50 people generated £780 million and employed 4.3 million people. Small businesses are the backbone of the UK economy by creating wealth, employment, opportunities for apprenticeships and the social impact they have on local communities. The award recognises innovative and impactful firms with inspirational leaders that have built high performing teams.

As a homegrown, independent company Carnegie Group has shown rapid growth without losing the original culture and spirit that has made it so successful.  The business has evolved over time as co-founders David Mindham and Simon Barren have innovated to meet new challenges.

In 2023, the architectural practice was added giving Carnegie the ability to offer full-service design and construction.   This has helped accelerate the company to win larger contracts and add more specialist staff.

David Mindham, Co-Founder and Director said of the award win: “This win means everything to us because it recognises more than just the numbers, it values the way that we have grown our business, through a genuine commitment to delivering excellence for our clients and in giving our people the opportunities they need to thrive.

We were up against some incredible companies, and we feel proud to have been a part of that mix.  We have enormous respect for other small businesses, because we know that it’s not always plain sailing, which is why this award and what it does for British businesses is so valuable, in shining a light on all of our collective achievements and celebrating the contribution we all make to the British economy.”

The judges, led by head judge Sophie Milliken MBE, CEO MOJA recognised the company’s, “…integrity-led growth, authentic leadership, and powerful people impact.”  They praised Carnegie for redefining what success looks like in the construction sector — proving that purpose, ethics, and excellence can go hand in hand.

In particular, they noted that, “The founders’ authentic leadership and integrity stood out, as they spoke openly about both their successes and challenges, sharing how their partnership was built on trust and shared values. Their strong stance on paying suppliers and subcontractors promptly — a commitment born from personal experience — reflects a business built on fairness and respect.”

They were impressed with Carnegie’s commitment to its people and said, “This was evident through its work creating opportunities for disadvantaged and young individuals, with an emotional employee story illustrating the company’s genuine, caring culture.

Competing — and excelling — beyond its own industry awards, Carnegie impressed the judges with credible growth, transparent communication, and grounded confidence.”

As the panel concluded, “Carnegie Group represents integrity-led growth that lifts people and suppliers alike — a construction business that competes, communicates, and cares at the highest level.”

Carnegie Group also picked up the Bronze Stevie Award in the 2025 International Business Awards for Company of the Year – Materials and Construction – Small, and the Gold for Employee of the Year at the Gatwick Diamond Business Awards.  Carnegie has also been shortlisted in four additional awards which underpins its success in a mixed economic environment.
