I’ve got throat cancer, but I can breathe in. I'm not worried about the time when it comes as I know that people will be there looking after me, holding my hand.”

Roger was 59 when he was told his throat cancer was terminal. Doctors gave him between a week and a month to live.
“When I was asked what I want to do (following diagnosis) I chose the hospice because of what I'd heard of the hospice through my life. And when I got here, my mind was blown as to how lovely this place is. It's just like a hotel. With better views and better care.
“I’ve been treated so well, it goes beyond respect. Everyone is here to help and they care about me, so when I feel down, they’ll come and cheer me up. I feel like I have a family of people looking after me.”
Roger often spent time in his private garden at the hospice, soaking in the peace and beauty of nature.
"The gardens are beautiful. I sit here and watch the insects. It's a special place. It really is.”
Another unexpected joy was the food.
“The chef just said I'll throw you something together and half hour later, out comes this meal. And that was the best meal I had. It was beautiful. It really was so nice. It was like Michelin presented and the taste. Absolutely one of the best meals I've had in years.”
Roger’s words are a powerful reminder of what your support makes possible.
“To make someone feel like this is absolutely priceless. So if you’ve ever given money to support this place, thank you. But they need you to please give again.”
Help us continue to be there for people like Roger.
